How does a teacher start NHD in the classroom?
We have been surveying NHD veteran teachers and getting their answers to the following question: What are the steps to starting an NHD program in class? Here's one answer (thanks Ms. Funk!)
1. Teacher becomes very familiar with the NHD website.
2. Teacher explains to students NHD and the theme for the year. Discuss what the different parts of the theme mean.
3. Student brainstorm about possible topics.
4. After teacher has approved the topic have each student write a 3-5 page research paper with 8-10 sources.
5. After basic research talk about categories.
6. Discuss primary and secondary sources.
7. More research.
8. Use research to start putting project together.

Back from National
First, my apologies for falling behind. I've created a Facebook page that will mirror the blog and have spent alot of time getting it going. Just search for the 'LaGrange College History Department NHD Page' and 'like' us. That way, whether you're on Facebook or the net, you'll be able to keep up to date.
I spent Monday and Tuesday at the University of Maryland. Monday, I attended two workshops for teachers. They were very informative and valuable. The second session, led by Laurie Baty and Betsy Bowers was excellent. Tuesday I spent the day judging senior individual exhibits. The experience blew me away. The quality and depth of research, the design elegance and beauty of the exhibits, and the students mastery of their topics was most impressive. Meeting those outstanding young people was the highlight of my day. Their energy, passion and abilities give me hope for the future. Anyone who doubts the value of NHD need do nothing more than attend the national competition and talk with the participants. There's real learning going on in NHD land and the children shine.
More later, including preliminary discussion of our fall workshop on the 2012 contest theme: Revolution, Reaction and Reform in History. Stay tuned.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
To all the students who participated in the West Georgia Regional National History Day Competition! It was a beautiful day on the campus of LaGrange College and, given that we moved most categories into new venues, a relatively glitch free day. Well done all!
For those of you headed to state, please remember that the LC NHD help desk is open for business. Research queries and other questions can be sent to us via email at: NHDhistory@lagrange.edu We will do our best to answer your questions
Again, congratulations one and all!

NHD Regional Contest
The clock is ticking down to regional competition. Friday, March 25th the Troup County Historical Society and the History department at LaGrange College will be hosting our regional. Teachers, registration is due to Ms. Minchew this week. On that Friday, we'd also like to invite you to stop by the 'teachers lounge' where you'll be able to get information about NHD and LC's new mentoring program (as well as a well deserved snack!) If you're new to NHD and getting ready to 'jump in' let me encourage you to stop by during the competition to see and 'feel' the excitement.
As always, don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!
See you soon!
